Extractions Q & A

Why are extractions sometimes necessary?

Even though permanent teeth are made to last your lifetime, it doesn't always happen. For example, you might need to have a tooth extracted because it's too seriously broken to keep. Decay, trauma, and lifestyle may all contribute to the need for having a tooth pulled.

Extractions may be necessary for other reasons, including:

  • Risk of infection from an unsuccessful root canal

  • Risk of infection during chemotherapy or an organ transplant

  • Advanced gum (periodontal) disease

  • Crowded or extra teeth

  • No room for wisdom teeth (third molars)

What are the steps for an extraction?

There are two types of extractions: a simple extraction and a surgical extraction. A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that is visible in your mouth.

In a simple extraction, a highly experienced dentist at Tysons Elite Dental will loosen the tooth with an instrument called an elevator and gently remove it with dental forceps.

A surgical extraction is a bit more complicated. The tooth may not have fully grown into the mouth, as is typical with wisdom teeth, or it may be broken off at the gum line.

In these cases, the dentist makes a small incision in your gum to remove the tooth. The affected tooth may need to be sectioned (cut into parts) so it can be more easily removed. Some bone may also need to be removed from around the tooth.

In both a simple extraction and surgical extraction, your dentist gives you a local anesthetic, so you don’t feel any pain.

If you're having a couple of teeth removed at one appointment, as is routine with wisdom teeth extraction, your dentist might give you a general anesthetic. You'll feel no pain and will sleep through the procedure.

How soon can I expect to heal from a tooth extraction?

Based on how many teeth you had taken out and your individual condition, the initial healing period typically takes one to two weeks.

You'll experience new gum tissue and bone growth where your teeth used to be. It's possible you could have trouble chewing or experience other pain and discomfort as you recover, based on the invasiveness of your dental procedure.

Every patient is different, so it’s best to contact Tysons Elite Dental and schedule a consultation so you can learn about your options and any necessary follow-up procedures like crowns or dental implants.
